OCR Level 5 Diploma courses for those working in primary and secondary education

Level 5

Candidates can decide between two OCR Level 5 Diploma courses, one on a Tuesday and the other on a Wednesday. The Level 5 Diploma is a one year course, beginning 25 and 26 September 2012 with completion expected in July 2013, designed to accredit skills and knowledge at Level 5 of the National Qualifications Framework.

Target Group – The qualification is appropriate for teachers and other professionals working at primary and secondary school levels. Although OCR promotes open access to all qualifications, in practice, candidates who do not have a professional background in providing learning support may find it difficult to access opportunities to generate the full range of evidence required to achieve the full qualification.

Candidates should possess an appropriate level of learning support experience. It is anticipated that candidates will have a high level of skill and be working at or above the equivalent of Level 3 in the following key skill areas: literacy, numeracy, ICT, working with others, improving own learning and problem solving.

Structure of Level 5 Diploma

The course consists of 4 units:

  • Understanding Special Educational Needs policy and context in relation to dyslexia/specific learning difficulties
  • Assessing the needs of individuals with dyslexia/specific learning difficulties
  • Planning and teaching learning programmes for individuals with dyslexia/specific learning difficulties
  • Evaluation of teaching and learning programmes for individuals with dyslexia/specific learning difficulties

The main types of teaching for this course will include the following: lectures, tutorials, workshops, discussion groups, directed study and research, and practical activities.

Assessment

Candidates will be observed teaching on a regular basis for assessment of practical skills during each teaching practice in addition to the formative and summative assessment of written work. Observation will be followed by tutorials giving the opportunity for individual learning and discussion.

Progression

Candidates may be able to progress to the OCR Level 7 Diploma in Assessing and Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia). They may also be able to progress to M.Ed level and other higher-level qualifications in education.

Assessment Pattern

All units are internally assessed and verified, and then externally verified by OCR.
